Choosing A Suitable new Email Address
Many people are still unaware of the different type of new email addresses available and tend to stick with the email provider they have always had. However, there are good reasons for making sure that you have not just one but two new email addresses as well as one that is a POP account and one that is web based.
All email addresses are the same right? There isn’t any difference between them: they are all email accounts and they are all done on the computer, so what’s the big deal?
Well new emails may always be done on the computer and they may always be generated through the internet, but there are two main different types of email and it is important that you choose the right type for you.
The first is basically known as POP mail. This is electronic mail that you send and receive through your interest service provider and you would usually do this via Outlook Express, Pegasus etc. The ‘joy’ of having a POP account is that the messages are taken out of the server once you download them. They are then stored on your own hard drive, so you can read them even when you are not on the internet.
However, often you will not be able to access these messages remotely: you may have to actually be at your PC to receive them although this situation is changing and many people are able to access accounts remotely and through Outlook Express.
A web based mail service is to some extent virtual. The messages are not stored on your hard drive, but rather you have them stored electronically. You can thus gain access to your emails when you are on holiday, or not in the office etc. The web based services are usually much easier to access, no matter where you are.
Some of the best new web based email accounts are...
www.googlemail.com
www.hotmail.com
Yahoo mail
Mail.com
There is a 3rd type of mail service, which is a forwarding service: you forward mail from one account to another automatically, which is a slightly tortuous thing to do and you are probably easier just setting up a web based mail service for your mails, rather than go to the bother of forwarding them.
As a rule of thumb it is usually helpful to have at least 2 email addresses, then if one goes down you still have access to the other. It also helps you to keep one email address private or for a very select group of friends and family and the other for more general use. Having one address that stores mails on your PC as well as one web based service is alsoa good idea.
So don’t just stick with one new email account, set yourself up so that you have at least two!
